The Penelopiad finished its run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland today. One Fringe reviewer called the play “dark, thought-provoking, and remarkably enjoyable.” Another praised its “top-quality acting, slick professionalism, and innovative staging.”
Talking with the Edinburgh Fringe Review, Georgie Henley noted “a nice mix between” Penelope’s maids “having no voice at all … in the play” and “the play giv[ing] them a voice,” a contrast that allows for “individual voice[s].” When asked which Greek god she wanted to be, Georgie chose Poseidon because she likes the sea and, jokingly, the control. Georgie also said she is writing her dissertation (2nd year) on T. S. Eliot. This interview is on YouTube. Thanks to photographer Nick Rutter and Cambridge Shortlegs, I added almost 15 dress rehearsal images to the gallery.
In other Fringe news, Georgie reviewed the sketch show Up the Auntie for Varsity. Giving it 2 stars, she said the play was “full of wasted comedic opportunities.”
Georgie will begin the Michaelmas term of her second year at Clare College, Cambridge on October 7. During the 2014-15 school year, she will study eighteenth-century, Victorian, and modern literature; literary theory, and Shakespeare – and write her dissertation.
